Therefore God exalted Jesus to the
highest place,
and gave Him a name that is above every
name,
that at the name of Jesus, every knee
should bow,
in heaven and on earth… and every tongue
confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Philippians 2:9-11
I learned today’s song, Take the Name of Jesus with You, in the big pavilion where the adults met for their meetings at campmeeting. During my teenage years, I was often invited to play the piano for “song service,” and this was one of the songs that I learned to play. It was a congregational favorite, and soon became a favorite of mine.
This hymn, also
known as Precious Name, was written in 1870 by Lydia Baxter, a New York
woman who was a bedridden invalid for most of her adult life. Mrs. Baxter enjoyed studying the names of
Jesus given in both the Old Testament and New Testament writings. This hymn flowed out of her extensive
research.
