After Jesus had said this, he went on
ahead,
Going up to Jerusalem… He sent two of
His disciples,
Saying to them, “Go to the village ahead
of you,
And as you enter it, you will find a
colt tied there,
Which no one has ever ridden. Untie it
and bring it here.
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying
it?’
Tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
They brought it to Jesus, threw their
cloaks on the colt,
And put Jesus on it. As he went along,
People spread their cloaks on the road.
Luke 19:29-30, 33-36
Jesus arrived in Bethany the Friday before Palm Sunday, to spend time with Mary, Martha and Lazarus. The next day was the Sabbath, which Jesus would have spent in traditional fashion with His friends. On Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey colt, fulling the ancient prophecy: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9
The milling
crowds welcomed Him with Hosanna! and with the words of Psalm 118:26: “Blessed
is He who comes in the name of the Lord,” thus acknowledging Him as the
Messiah, the coming King of Israel.
