For the Lord does not see as man sees,
for man looks at the outward appearance,
but the Lord looks at the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7
Samuel was tasked by God to go out in the countryside and anoint the next King of Israel from the family of Jesse. Samuel took one look at the firstborn, “I’m in control” son and decided this was the next king. God said, “No.” He then chose the brawny one. God said, “No.” No matter what criteria Samuel used – best looking, brightest smile, most polite, Daddy’s favorite – God said, “No.” When they ran out of sons in the house, the father sent for the redheaded kid tending the sheep. God said, “Yes!”
“We live in times when people are judged by the color of their skin, their language, culture or religion. We tend too be impressed by a person’s resume, how they dress and where they live, instead of the leanings of their heart. We sometimes forget that Christ died for all people, not just a privileged few.” - Walter Carson, Words of Life
It was no happenstance
that Jesus, in response to the question of which commandment was greatest,
answered that there were only two equal commands: Love
God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbor (every
other person on this planet) as you love yourself. Tall order, but He is here to help.
