We Gather Together is a hymn that we in America associate with the Thanksgiving holiday, but it was actually written some time in 1597 to celebrate Holland’s freedom from Spain.  The Reformation had reached the Netherlands, and the people of Holland wished to follow the Protestant faith.  The unknown Dutch author of this hymn was full of thanksgiving that his people were finally free from Spanish tyranny – free to worship God as they chose.
